The easiest way is to go to a title agency and have them perform a title search.

In lieu of ordering a title search... I would first go to the court house... if not online and do searches on the property and former owner(s). Generally, you can find out a lot online, but when risking money... I want to be sure as possible, so I would go to the courthouse and search...

Don't be afraid to ask for help there, either... that is your tax dollars at work!
