shin pain
About 12 months ago I banged my lower leg just to the side of my shin bone on a solid wood shoe rack that had been left open it left a dent, swelling and bruising. The bruise is still there now 12 months on and recently mostly the last 3 weeks I have been experiencing shooting pains up and in the shin and in the general area of the bruise sometime I can just be sat there doing nothing and it's a very painful achy feeling or shooting pain. I have been to my GP who said take anti inflams and pain killers and that it is damage to my peroneus muscle (he never X-ray it, he just guessed) I have taken the pain killers and anti inflammatorys for over a week now but there is no improvement can you help?

Without knowing your age, weight and general health, it's hard to say online. A 'dent' should not last long at all, and it sounds like you might have slow circulation to and from your legs and possibly chronic edema.
A bruise can still press on nerves and if the blood has dried it can take a very long time to be carried away by normal process.
As we get older bruising can be very common and appear for little reason and stay for a very long time.
Try keeping your feet up, massaging your shin, soaking in warm tubs, and also walking each day to promote good circulation. If you are overweight and or smoke - much more difficult.

You should probably consult with an orthopedic doctor. A bruise should never last more than a few weeks to a month.

I saw my gp and he said the bruise is taking longer to heal due to the muscle but again as I stated all he did was feel my leg then said it was my peroneus muscle I'm not sure what to do next as nothing is helping the pain is not constant but all I have to do is stretch my foot for example point toes towards the floor for more than 10 seconds and I'm in agony.

Okay, then make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. Get a second opinion. You are your best health advocate.

I live in the UK and I would have to be referred to an orthopaedic Dr by my own GP which is probably not likely as he likes to diagnose you himself and then sends you on your way. But thanks for your help, I just wondered if anyone else had any ideas on what it could be, if my gp was right or how I could stop it hurting.
