93 ford escort lx won't shift into overdrive

Just got 93 ford escort lx 4 door. Automatic won't go into overdrive. Ran 2nd gear over 4000 rpms. Car has only 31000 miles on it, has been a city car and has never been on highway till yesterday. Any answers??
