Dog to dog aggression
I adopted a 4 1/2 year old Shepard mix about 2 months ago. She was in a shelter as a puppy and then again as an adult. I adopted her from the rescue group that got her out of the shelter. She is sweet and loving and always happy. She jumps on new people she meets but is always happy to see them. A friend was getting rid of a dog so I had her bring the dog over to see if they would get along. 30 seconds into the meeting my dog attacked the other. It took 3 of us to get them apart. She ripped the dogs ear requiring stitches. It was horrific. I should add that she goes nuts when she sees other dogs when we go for a walk, I thought it was because she wanted to play. Clearly this is not the case. Now I don't know what to do. I am afraid to take her for a walk for fear of her getting loose. I don't know if I should be concerned about her around children, and I am devastated that my sweet girl could turn into this animal I did not even recognize. I would appreciate any advice.

Dog aggression and people aggression are two different things. Here's a good site - When Your Dog is Overly Aggressive Towards Other Dogs | petMD.
You obviously have to keep her close and in check when she's anywhere where she'll see other dogs. With an aggessive dog there's always the thought that she could knock someone down trying to get to another dog.

We need more info - does this happen regularly? Has he been checked by your Vet to make sure he's healthy?

Judy is right but did you know that sometimes dogs attack simply because they are afraid that they will be attacked? Noboby knows that background experiences a shelt dog has had, some not so great. Most dogs can be trained to get along with other dogs but that may take an experienced dog trainer several months. Not a good time to experiment with a new dog in your home. Obviously do not adopt this new dogs and YES you should be concerned about children. Kids do crazy things when they see a dog like run at them and try to hung them. Many dogs will sense this as a possible attack and attack back. Have you done any obedience training with this dogs?

I rescued a Shepherd once and it was the same deal. Though she could make friends after a long walk together and under close supervision. Take the two dogs out for a walk together... a LONG one... and then let them sniff each other and have a play in a neutral setting (ie a reserve or park) Also I would put a muzzle on your dog just in case.
