Foreign U.S. Source Income Subject to Witholding
    Please can you help!

    I am a UK citizen.

I recently received 'Form 1042-S - Foreign U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding. It looks from the form as though Computershare, who hold my HP shares for me, have withheld 15% of the Gross Income from the dividends on my shares.

I understand this may be because they do not hold a signed W8BEN form from me which confirms I am a non-resident alien and therefore not subject to US tax. Computershare are sending me a W8BEN form which will prevent this problem in the future but my question is how do I get the tax back which they are currently withholding?

    Any thoughts/ideas/comments appreciated!

    Best Regards
    Godfrey.

You will need to file a Form 1040NR-EZ to get the withheld taxes back.

How much are we talking about?
