Why does my new American standard Cadet 3 low water toilet "run" momentarily between flushes? I happen to hear it several times a day if I am upstairs. Thank you!

Hi kappers, check your flapper to be sure it's sealing tight, make sure there's slack in the flush chain, if it's too tight it can make the flapper leak. Good luck

Your tank parts needs adjusting. Let me show you how. Check the tank water level, it should be at the mark in the tank or 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the over flow tube. Now look at the flapper, If it has wavy edges on the flat surface, replace it. The linkage between the flapper and the flush lever should have 1/4" play when the tank is filled. Also, check the small tube coming out of the top of the ballcock and make sure it's connect to and draining into the white overflow tube. If the leak is at the base of the tank there are two brass bolts on both sides of the flapper, if the tank is loose, leaking or wobbly, snug up the bolts. If there is dampness at the base of the bowl, pop off the china caps and snug down the closet bolts. I would check all this out before paying 50$ for a service call and 50$ a hour thereafter. I'm contractor for the last 17 years and this is the first time I have problems with the toilet tank installation , I bought four toilets, three of them had a leaking tank I thought that the place that had bolt did not have enough pressure and I put more pressure every five minutes but the toilets kept on leaking, I took the bolts out and I put plumbing putty in the top and the bottom and installed it again but it kept on leaking then I removed the putty and I put liquid teflon sealant on the bolts and finally the leaking stopped.

What brand were the toilets? You cranked them down tight and left them that way? Did you leave a little "give" to the tank? Let me know, Tom

Hi,

I just installed a BRAND NEW Cadet 3. It runs now and then between flushes as well. It is not leaking out around the bottom of the tank, the water is leaking into the bowl. It will run for a few seconds 2-3 times every night. The flapper is not wavy, there is slack in the chain, and it is BRAND NEW. There is no excuse for this. Any further ideas beyond what has been discussed?

Pull the lid and check the tanks water level. It should be 1/2"? Below the white overflow tube when the tanks filled. Good luck, Tom

I have a Cadet 3 toilet as well, and am having similar running. No water leaks, so I believe it is a flapper issue. I have replaced the flapper (twice) and have felt the flapper opening to make sure nothing was obstructing the seal. It leaks enough that it refills about every 20 minutes. If I turn the water off, the water level drops several inches over night, then seems to stabilize about half way up the overflow tube.
I meant to also note that this started about 8 months after installing the toilet.

If it's not leaking past the flapper then I would suspect a hole or a cracked is the overflow tube periods. If that's the case then the solution would be to replace the flush the valve and overflow tube. Let me know your thoughts. Back to you, Tom

I would also make sure the refill pipe is not stuffed too far down the overflow tube, if it is, it can create a siphon, and drain the tank. The refill pipe should be aimed into the overflow tube, and not inserted below the top of the overflow tube.

American Standard/Fluidmaster is having quality control problems with their tank manufacturing. I called their tech support, who sent me a new flapper. Did not fix problem. Called them again, they sent me a new flapper & seat assembly. Did not fix problem. Called them again and the sent me a whole new tank with all the guts, with markings on the parts suggesting it was assembled by hand and tested.

That fixed the problem.

Kudos to their technical support folks, but I'd much rather have it work right the first time. My retailer will no longer sell those toilets because of customer complaints. He said they used to be good toilets, but now they are crap. Would recommend another brand - but not Kohler, they have the same issues.

Turns out for my problem it was the fill tube sitting too far down the overflow tube. The toilet has a small ring at the top of the overflow tube where the fill hose sits, and I guess it slipped out of that ring and into the overflow tube. The design is such that it is pretty easy for that tube to come out of the ring that it sits in, so I imagine it may happen again at some point.
