It doesn't hurt. (My opinion) It's like getting your ears pierced. You may talk funny for a few days and you will have to rinse with mouthwash several times a day. Refrain from smoking or things that can infect it. Swelling should be down in a day or 2-3. You can change it after swelling is down but I recommend at least a week. Good luck!

It doesn't hurt. Numbing product or not, it feels the same. I would still suggest using the numbing product cuz' the clamp hurts! Anyway, as for cleaning--rinse your mouth with NON-ALCOHOLIC mouthwash (avoid Listerine). You cannot have fruits of any kind (citrus acid), spicy foods or hot-temperate foods as they will cause discomfort and pain the first week because the tongue is so sore. CHEW SLOWLY. Rinse your mouth with warm non-iodinized sea salt water at least 2-3 times a day. DO NOT brush your tongue with tooth brush bristles, you could knick yourself. Use the tongue cleaner provided on the back of the toothbrush. After about a week (or when the swelling have gone down), your bar will be downsized and you are able to eat normally, but still chew slowly. No smoking/consuming alcohol for the first week after piercing it (before downsizing). If you consume alcohol or smoke, be sure to continue rinsing your mouth.

Eat a milkshake with a spoon. Sucking through a straw is difficult when your tongue is swollen.
That's all I have for now. If you get it pierced and have any further concerns, feel free to ask me.

I am only 15. I have had my tongue pierced for almost a year now. I will tell you first hand it does not hurt ONE BIT(: it is better to wash your mouth out with NOT MOUTHWASH but with salt water. Don't uses mouthwash. Just brush your teeth as normal. It will swell pretty heavily for about a week or two. And you will get some small indentation around the ball of the toung ring itself. But this is normal.
