Federal Tax Return for a J-1 visa holder
    Hi,

I am a French single student doing an internship in the US. In 2011, I worked from October 17th to December 23rd for a company which only withheld the federal income tax from my pay slip. I received a W-2 for that.
Can I claim exemption from the Federal Income Tax ? If so, which document should I fill in ?
I only worked from October to December but was in the US for vacation in April, July and part of September.

If you were a student, you were NOT exempt from federal income taxes. However, I believe there IS a treaty exemption of $5,000, plus your personal exemption of $3,700, plus whatever itemized deductions you may have, so given the fact that you worked for only 9 weeks, it is possible that ALL of your income will be tax-exempt if it was less than $8.700.

You will need to file Form 1040NR-EZ plus Form 8843 (which must be filed EVERY year even if you do not work).
