Received check from capital one NA a expense check
I paid off an account back in sept. I do have another outstanding account, charged off. Even if I paid off this first account a little early, how could I get a refund? Is it a scam?

I have never heard of any refund for paying off early, esp if you have on unpaid account. "Charge off" does not mean you do not still owe it, it is an accounting term. They can and normally do either sue or sell off charge off accounts for collection.
Have you called them to ask them about the check before you cash it?

'I paid off an account back in sept.'
What kind of account?
'I do have another outstanding account, charged off.' What does charged off mean?
If you paid a loan back early then chances are you might get a refund of interest not due.
But overall I don't understand your question enough.
Credit card companies send BLANK checks all the time in the hopes you will write checks against your card at very high rates. Don't do it. Rip them up.

What is very unclear here is what this check is. Is it a check made payable to you? Did a letter accompany it? Was there any memo or something attached to indicate what its for?
It is possible if you paid off a loan early, that you did overpay and are entitled to a refund of unaccrued interest. But, in that case, there should have been a letter explaining that.
As for the "charge off", as noted that has no impact on your obligation to pay. But I have no idea what that has to do with your receiving a check.

If it's a scam, the check would not be a Capital One check. Or at least not a legal check. If you just received a check in an envelope with no information, then it's a scam.

It's a scam... don't cash that cheque... even if you call them they wouldn't tell you anything... shred it and move on.. if you use it they will bill you and would start posting interest and other fees on you if you don't pay back...
