Back in August of 2009 I saw a film on an international flight. It took place in South Africa. The first few minutes of the movie were actually from the ending of the movie. The main character has been shot and is resting in a building several stories high when the police arrive and he attempts to make a run for it.
Then the main character has a flashback. The entire film is a flashback actually with the main character narrating through his memories, starting when he and another boy (I believe he was his brother?) grow up. To earn some cash they start hijacking cars. Their "test" for getting hired was hijacking a white Isuzu, but it is not long before they decide to move on from that dangerous business for fear of getting caught.
As the movie progresses the two young boys become adults and the main character starts a non-profit business and rallies the people of Johannesburg to protest high rent and real-estate costs. Of course the main character is no stranger to conning others and is not the type to freely do things to help others?
Then he helps a white girl get her white brother back from a harry situation, using his own money to do so, and becomes well connected with the family. He also conflicts with a western police officer (if I remember correctly he was Australian or European?). At the end of the movie the main character and his friend end up in a huge gang shootout and the brother dies.

This was an amazing movie and I really wish I could remember more. If anyone could find it for me it would be an amazing treat to me and the friends I plan to show this incredible film to. I have tried on other forums to no result. Past answers have been City of God and Tsotsi, both of which are, unfortunately, incorrect.

Found it on another forum. It's Gangster's Paradise Jerusalem. Highly recommend it!
