I have yellow water coming from all the taps and can't figure out what to do next. I have city water and the city replaced a busted pipe on my road. The water in the house turned yellow. I called the city out and they blew water out of the fire hydrant. That didn't work the next day they did it again cleaner but still yellow. The fourth day they put a pipe in my pipe to the house drained the water from the house for four hours it was clear as it should be. Within two days though the water in house is back to being yellow. We have not drained the water heater which we can do but why would all the water be yellow again? Would draining the hot water heater work? It has been 8 days and it is yellow pee, yellow. Any suggestions? Should we call the city again? Should we drain the hot water heater? Any thing I can check? Thanks. Casy

Yes drain and also flush the heater. It holds 40-80 gallons of water and mixes incoming and outgoing water, it could take 200 gallons of normal use to flush this heater. Let me first ask, is the water yellow coiming from your garden tap or outside spigot?

Yes, the water on the outside tap/spigot is clear.

Is it affecting both the hot and the cold? And you don't drain a hot water tank you flush it with the water on. Would you like directions on how to flush your heater? Back to you, Tom

Yes please give me directions. I read the DIY on how to drain the hot water heater but not how to flush it.

It is gas if that makes a difference.

Gas and electric are all the same when it comes to flushing or draining. Lets start with the flush to get debris out. Close the gas valve. Connect a hose to the drain spigot at the bottom of the heater, direct the hose to waste and twist the drain open, allow to run for 2 minutes. Close the drain spigot. shut off the supply cold water and open a hot tap somewhere in the house. This will alow the heater to totally drain, takes a good 5 minutes or more. Once drained close the drain spigot and disconnect the hose. Open the cold supply and allow to fill until cold water comes out of that open tap, then close the tap and relight the burner. It.

Just for the heck of it open all hot taps while the heater is draining, that will clear mush of the yellow water out of your lines. Once everything is drained, buttoned back up and turned back on run all taps for 2 minutes and I think you will see no more yellow

If it was Electric, You would also turn off Breaker
