I found out dirt is cheap here in NC, and the labor to spread it out. Just a little phone work and you'll get a good price. Beats the heck out of watching grass grow in that in that good 'ole NC clay.

What type of grass are you trying to grow? The type of grass may be part of your problem. Also it may help to put in an annual first. This would get some roots in the clay and start to break it up. I guess it also depends on how dense the clay is... if it is like pottery you may need to add something to it. But if money is an issue I would try annual first. Also it sounds like part of the problem is water... that is why the septic field is growing better than the other parts. Well water is cheap. I would try keeping what you have watered well first. Add annual to the bare spots and ask a local nursery what types of grasses work well in your area. As time passes the roots will add organics to the clay and break it up. Time is on your side! Don't give up, good luck!
