Tax Deductions for H1 visa Holder
    Hi,

I'm a Software Professional. I'm presently at H1 Visa status. My Employer location is in NJ, but I always work at my client location (CT).And I've rented house near my work location (CT). Am I eligible to deduct my rent expenses as part of form 2106-EZ and declare it as "Unreimbursed Employee Business Expenses"?

    Thanks,

The important thing is not where your employer is located, but rather where your principal abode is located. If the house in CT is your principal abode then you cannot deduct its cost. So the question is - do you actually maintain a home somewhere else which is your principal abode, and consider the CT job as a temporary assignment?

    Everything ebaines says is accurate.

State Tax Issue: Even though your employer is located in New Jersey, YOU are working and located in Connecticut, so you pay ONLY Connecticut state income tax. If your employer is withholding NJ income taxes, you will have to file a NJ tax return to get a TOTAL refund, then send that refund to Connecticut (plus an under-withholding penalty).

I assume you mean tax RATES, which remained the same.

The standard deduction went up, as did the personal exemption.
