My 3 year old golden has bumps and sores on her mouth, chin, and nose. She started showing signs 3 days ago after I gave her a deer bone to chew on.We took her to the Vet and she was diagonised with canine acne. The vet gave her cephalexin and prednisone meds to help her recover but she seems to be worse today. When we called back today they said bring her in Monday, but I hate to wait another day. We are very worried about our Jemma girl and hate to see have like this. Could this be something else?

YIKES! Looks like allergy to me but I'm not a Vet.

I'd call the Vet and ask how long it's going to take for her to clear up.

Oddly enough some time someone who was feeding their dog out of an aluminum dish had a similar problem. They switched to a plastic food dish and the problem was solved.

Poor girl must be so uncomfortable and my experience with steroids was that they changed my dog's personality - and not for the better.

I'd call the Vet again.

I had a foster who had acne, and it looked pretty much just like that. The treatment was costly and time consuming, hence the lack of people willing to adopt, he ended up being adopted by a vet in the end. It's basically like human acne, needs to be treated and some may out grow it, but usually it stays with them and can only be controlled. It can be controlled with diet, but it's very difficult to treat with diet alone. Usually treated with topical treatment. Some gels are similar to those people use for acne, like benzoyl peroxide. It is important that you use only the products recommended by your veterinarian, as your dog's skin is thinner and more sensitive than yours. The average product containing benzoyl peroxide for human acne contains 10 percent benzoyl peroxide while the maximum concentration that could be used on a dog is 5 perce and mild anti-seborrheic shampoos

There are other skin diseases that look similar such as
Demodicosis. This is a non-contagious type of mange, and it is important to do skin scrapings to rule out the possibility of demodicosis. Your veterinarian will scrape an area on the chin and to the proper testing. Did your vet do a fungal culture?

The vet wants us to come in on Monday for a culture. I just hate to wait around without doing anything to help her.

I would bet it is from the deer bone. Acne can get very bad in some dogs but it doesn't usually spring up that quickly when it's never happened before in a 3 year old dog.

Just like humans dogs often develop acne as 'teenagers' but will still get the occasional outbreak or pimple as they get older, and just like us there are usually some pimples that look as though they can be squeezed... I see more of a rash here than individual pimples.

I have a home remedy for acne but I would not like to try it on this dog as to me it looks more like a sort of contact dermatitis or allergy.

Well it's been 10 days and she is progressively getting worse. The rash has spread to her checks, eyes, and she has a spot on each forearm. It has started to break open the skin and she bleeds all the time. We go back to the vet today to get the results from the biopsy but things are looking grim. It almost seems like a flesh eating bacteria. We are almost ready to have her put down, after watching her suffer like this for 10 days. This came on so quickly and has progressed at a rapid pace. I pray no one has to experience this with such a loving part of their family. If we get any results I will post them.

Good news! She is getting better. The vet said the steroids were drying the rash up, and the antibiotics were helping with the infection. Bad news is she will be on the steroids for about another month to slowly bring her off. She is getting back to her self and we got her a brand new soccer ball for Christmas. I can't wait to play outside with her again. As far as what was wrong with her, the vet called it a severe case of pyroderma.
