Christmas Gift to an in house attorney
My manager sent out an email to ask each of us (6) For $100 each as to send a gift to an attorney (in house) at Christmas. Can I say no? It makes me look like not a team member. But I think that is excessive.

They can not require you to "give" a gift, if they want a company gift, they should use company money.

    Hello h:

Is the same manager going to solicit the in house lawyer for money to buy YOU a gift?? I'll bet not. I don't know, but I suspect the in house lawyer makes a LOT more money than you...

Frankly, I'd be outraged, and I'd tell him - NOT by email, but in person. That COULD be the reason why I don't work in corporate America.

Of course you can say no. They can't require you to contribute to a gift, but you're right that you may be regarded as not a team player by your manager.

If asking for 100 dollars per person I would have to assume you are in the 50 to 80 thousand a year range at least, not in the 20 dollar a hour range. So I did forget to ask how much you were making. Requesting a certain amount is actually very unprofessional.
