How do I get my 4 year old cat to use the litter box?
We have a 4 year old male cat who refuses to use the litter box. He'll go right by it, but not in it. He was with us when he was born and never used the box. We've changed litter, used more then 1 box, moved the box, and put him in it but nothing works. We have 4 other cats that use it but he won't. My grandparents (who I live with) have pour health and I fear that this will make hem more ill. The cat is def so he can't go outside. We don't know what to do. Please help. We can't spend much money because we live off social security. We're desprit. Any thing you can tell me will help.

He is neutered. And he goes along the living room walls (mostly in corners) and under a table in my grandparent's bedroom.

Have you tried different kinds of litter? Have you kept the litter box clean? Has he ever used the litter?

Is the litter box somewhere that he doesn't like? Move it to where he poops and pees?

We have but he goes every where. We've put it where he goes and he goes right next to it instead. We've tried about every thing.

Your new puppy doesn't help the situation, I bet.

So you have been cleaning up after this cat for four years? Something isn't right with this. Have you talked with the vet about it?

No, never talked to a vet, just kept cleaning. Didn't know it was a vet problem. What could a vet do with this? And we don't have the money for a vet.We just need to know a way to get him t use the litter box. He's my grandfather's cat and we can't get rid of the cat because he's his only real companion and keeps him happy even though he has cancer. We just want him to use the litter box.

If he hasn't been to a vet, how did the cat get neutered? How do you know the cat is deaf?

The cat may have a urinary problem that is preventing him from using the litter box. There are ways to get low-cost or free service from a vet.

He was in lone enuph to be fixed. All our cats are, we know he is def because you can scream in the cat's ear and he won't flinch, he doesn't hear any thing. I'm only hear looking for and answer. I'm 16 and need my cat to use a litter box.

In order to help you in the best way, I've had to ask these questions.

Please don't scream in your cat's ear, deaf or not.

What about the urinary problem that your cat could have?

I don't literally scream in the cats ear, and we have 3 boxes for 5 cats. And I don't know about a urinary problem but how would that make him not use a litter box? He goes just fine, he just won't do it in the box.

Some cats do not like to share their bathrooms with other cats. He might be one of those.

Are the boxes covered or open?

If he has no urinary infection, my conclusion is that he has a problem with the litter or with the other cats. I still think a vet visit is in order.

We have one cat who always pees right next to the box (instead of in it), so we spread several thicknesses of newspaper next to the box. Sure enough, that's where she goes, and it's an easy clean-up.
