You read across the solenoid with an ohm meter to see if it is good. A reading around 1-3 kilo-ohms means the solenoid is good. It is a 120 volt solenoid and is operated by a micro-switch inside the icemaker which is initiated by a thermostat on the side of the trough where the ice is frozen. It will not initiate if the freezer will not get cold enough due to dirty coils under the refrigerator. Before you try to do any work make sure to unplug the refrigerator and pull it out from wall, remove rear cover, and clean the coils very well by vacuuming and spraying off with water, then replace the cover and let run and see if everything starts working. You can check the solenoid coil on water valve before you replace cover, however. You will see a two-prong plug on top of solenoid which you can remove and check the coil with an ohm meter. Make sure fan and coils are clean before replacing cover, and never leave off cover as the refrigerator needs this cover on it to route air through coils and will overheat without cover on.
