Is there a treatment for haemophilia in dogs? Does a gene therapy exist?

You would have to ask a vet about this but insight for you is there is no cure for humans with this condition, but treatment is injections of the clotting factor removed from donated blood. This treatment is called prophylaxis and is self administered. Of course, it would be near impossible to treat a dog this way, if it was possible, people with this condition must closely monitor their surroundings and take great care that they do not receive any trauma to their skin in the way of cuts or bruises.

As far as I know there really is no treatment for these types of dogs.
We have one in our clinic and the owner has to be very careful and know the signs of a bleeding episode. The dog has received about 4 blood transfusions in the past few years when she has an episode that's worse than the others.

I've taken the advice of some vets by now, they claim that blood or plasma transfusions can prove helpful only in cases of blood episodes. Is prophylaxis any different? Could you give me more info please? Can it be applied on a regular basis in order to prevent severe episodes? I've also been advised to treat him with transamine but I'm not sure if it is suitable for puppies. His age is 2 months. Thank you all so much for your answers.

Prophylaxis is for derivatives of human blood only. Dogs have a far different betabolism. I don't think their blood problems can be treated the same way. As an example, Borzoi are entirely different from any other breed and their blood group cannot be treated the same way, as for transfusions during surgery.

You should have told us the age of your dog, I probably should have asked you but this makes a big difference. Is this a dog you are treating for someone, are you a breeder who needs this information? I have to say,as always, that we can't diagnose here on AMHD for humans, and it would apply to dogs as well.

Dog blood types are completely different, as I mentioned before in the Borzoi.

In my original question I included more information, the topic's title was probably selected by an admin. Of course I am neither a vet nor a professional, as I said my dog (and I'm just his owner, I don't know if that also makes any difference) has already seen by vets. If the advise I had been given is not plausible, I wonder what is, since I haven't been given one from here yet. Either way I try to collect information from anywhere I can. I am still puzzled, so what's the exact role of his age and is there a cure or not, at least something to expect in the near future. Thank you for the link.

Of course you role as his owner is the most important of all; he is still a baby at 2 months and I understand your concern. No cure for this for humans, no cure for dogs, just intervention and maintenance for both; I can't give you any more advice or information then what I have given, sorry. You have seen vets and probably because that is plural, you have already had second and third opinions, right?

I asked your status in this question because we do from time to time get questions from back yard breeders, people having bred their dogs for sale without any idea of what they are doing.

I unfortunately don't have a lot of experience dealing with these types of disorders in dogs.
Where do you live? Would you be willing to send your pup to a specialist?
