Outlet voltage?
I installed a tile backsplash in my kitchen in August and I needed to add outlet box extenders to accommodate the extra tile width. I was checking the voltage on the end of the line plug in the three outlet circuit with a tester and I touched a black wire to the side of the box and it sparked and popped the breaker. Since that time I have no voltage in the plug itself but I have 120 V at the black wires when I touch the other meter probe to the ground or the outlet frame or center screw. Obviously I would like to get the voltage back. I replaced all three outlets and it I have the same condition in all three outlets. It is possible that I burned something off in the breaker in the service box? Or did I burn a white wire in the wall somewhere where I can't see it? When I touch a probe to the black wires and the other probe to a white wire, I get 0 volts. I am not sure where to go next? I know my meter will test continuity but I have never done that - my only idea was to check continuity on the whites between boxes to try to isolate a break. Any advice would be great?

Do you know whether you have a GFCI breaker for this circuit, or is it protected by a GFCI receptacle.
When you test with a meter, place the black probe on the device box and then place the red probe on the black lead on the receptacle. Set your meter to 240 or higher voltage and let us know what you get. When you measure between Black and White you should see 120V. When you measure between White and Ground there should be zero (0) volts. What do you get? |
