    Need help to light my very old gas wall-heater please
    I need the expertise of people from this forum :) I've just moved in in a house with gas wall-heaters (one in the living-room, one down the hall near bedrooms.

    Here are the pictures of the inside :



    So as you can see, there are two knobs : one to set the heat level (left), one with "off, pilot, on" (right).
    I'm supposed to : - turn the left knob on the lowest level : Done
    - turn the right knob on "Off " for 5min : Done
    - turn the right knob on "Pilot" and depress it until it lit or a flame appears : it never lit and no flame...

    I wanted to use a gas-lighter to add flames by myself but I was thinking maybe I can burn myself! And even worst, explode the house !

    Does someone know how it works please ?

    On the pilot circuit, you need a match or better yet one of those long candle lighters. Move the knob so that the pilot position lines up with the mark. Push the knob down and hold a flame in front of the pilot orifice. It may take a while for a flame to appear if the furnace has been off for a while. If you can't find the pilot light orifice, I suggest you get an experienced person to help you. Gas is not something to fool with and even experienced people have been burned by flashbacks from lighting heaters.

    I'm not sure about where is the pilot light orifice. So maybe you'r right, I should ask someone experienced.

    On the gas valve you should see a small tube, about 1/8" in diameter, usually aluminum. It comes from the gas valve and ends in, usually, a small metal hood. Also from the gas valve is a very small copper wire that also ends at the same point as the pilot gas line. This is your thermocouple safety. Push down the gas valve as noted in my original answer and put the flame in this area. You should see the flame move as air and gas hit it. Once the pilot is lit, hold down the valve another 10-15 secs, let it up, and the pilot light should stay on. Then, turn the gas valve to the ON position. Please be careful, wall heaters have a habit of backfiring and you don't want your pretty face in there. Brian
