    Let the distance Charity walks be c and that of Michele be m.

    You are told this in the first sentence:
    c = 3m

    You have to multiply the distance of Michele by 3 so that both distances are equal.

    The difference is 1/5 a mile.

    c - m = 1/5

    c is larger, so this is good.

    You have two equation and two unknowns, can you solve for c and m? :)
