    Maybe because it IS overheating?

You are aware it can overheat even if the fan is working.

What other symptoms does it show of overheating, like loss of coolant from the radiator?

    Consider replacing:

    . Thermostat.

. Radiator--phosphate scale may be blocking the passages.

Define more clearly what you mean by "showing over heating" so we understand.
Are you losing any coolant? Has the vehicle shut down due to overheating? Is the temp gauge going into the red danger zone?
If not, you may just be dealing with higher than normal ambient temps, which can cause some vehicles to run hotter than we're used to. Cooling fans run longer, too. Also, most dash displays aren't as accurate as we could stand. They're more like an 'indication' than fact.

Some drivers may think their car's A/C isn't working well any more. Go get one of those little thermometers they sell at the parts stores and stick it into a central outlet and watch the temperature that your A/C is making.
    You may be surprised...

This heat won't last forever. Neither will your car if you don't maintain the various systems that make it work. Replace coolant based on at least the factory recommendation. Change the engine oil and filter when it's due. Sooner if you're driving your ride harder than city traffic.
And always remember to check your tire pressure.

I have a 1988 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4. The gas gauge and the temperature gauge would stop working at the same time when the car warmed up. They both would come back on periodically and then off again. Currently they have not come back on in about 3 months. How do I fix this problem?
