    I was served a 3 day notice to pay rent or surrender possession.

    It means you have three days to pay in full, or eviction proceedings WILL be filed and you will have to leave. What state is this? State law determines how fast the eviction can take place. Most places are 30 days... but a few are shorter or longer.
