    Acetylene Tips
    Hi,

I have a plumbing Acetylene and have determined that the improper flame is being caused by the "Tip"

I do understand that these tips are numbered according to flame, etc.

I have taken my tip apart, but to no avail.

What I do not know is what these numbers correspond too in real life.

I will be doing minor plumbing - most likely never silver solder over a 1" copper piping.

I have heard that I would need a #5?? Tip

Can you advise, please. Thank you

    Hi Bob,

Are we talking about a turbotorch acetylene setup here? If so, have you removed the orifice? If not, remove the orifice using an 1/8" allen wrench and install it in the tip of the torch handle and turn the gas supply on to clear the orifice of sediment that may have built up... that may fix the issue with that particular tip. Check out this link with pictures to see what I am talking about (5 pages long):

    http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads...2012-10-09.pdf

An A-3 tip (see image) will silver solder up to 1/2" or soft solder up to 1" copper tubing or smaller.

An A-5 tip will silver solder a 7/8" tube or smaller, or will soft solder 1.5" tubing or smaller...

An A-8 tip will silver solder up to 1" tubing or smaller, or will soft solder 2" tubing or smaller...

Basically, the larger the tip number the larger the copper tubing to be worked with right?

Need more info. Let me know, OK?

    Mark,

Thanks for your answers. Yes, It's a Turbo Torch.

    Here's a photo (I hope)

I have taken the two small allen screws off. I believe my torch is NOT what's shown in the pictures.

The orifice on torch is one piece and comes off when I unscrew the two tip parts.

This certainly is an older tip. I've had it for sometime.

    Is the orifice replaceable?

    Thanks again

    Bob

    Mark,

Sorry for the 2nd answer but I forgot to ask again about Tip sizes..

What size tip to solder plumbing copper 1/2" up to 1 1/2" using silver non lead solder??

From your previous answer I would guess a number A-5??

    Thanks

One tip will not do the job of 1/2" to 1.5" properly... you would need two different tips here. Use an A-3 tip for the 1/2" and an A-5 tip for the 1.5" copper... otherwise, you could easily burn the 1/2" tubing/fittings using a tip that is too large.

The orifice should be replaceable.. would need to take it to a plumbing supply house and see if the newer turbotorch orifices fit.

Finally, in my opinion, replace that old tip... looks broken to me... ;)

    Mark,

Thanks again. I'll be going to a plumbing supply soon and will advise the results. I may simply just purchase
    A newer replacement tip.

    Thanks
