My veterinarian suggested that my 10 year old lab take 1500 mg Glucosamine daily for arthritis. I have a bottle of tablets I purchased for my use for knee pain that will provide 1500 mg Glucosamine and 1500 mg MSM by taking two tablets daily. The vet said it was OK for the dog to take MSM, but some of the reading I have done suggests that 1500 mg per day might be too much. I would appreciate some comments and advice. Thanks.

The dosage goes by weight for us as well as dogs; perhaps your vet was going by the weight of your lab, which he would have readily avialable in his records. By the way, the recommended dosage for MSM in association with glucosamine is l300mg so this is just a little over what your vet recommended. It is kind of hard to judge when both supplements are combined in one.

Anything over the l500 will be eliminated in his urine, the same as us, any over dosage of vitamins or supplements is eliminated in our urine that the body cannot use.

If you have a problem with your vet's advice, then give your dog what you are comfortable giving him. The glucosamine/controidin will help him immensely; the same as it effectively aided my Walker Hound and she was 80 lbs.

Years ago we didn't have this supplement available and the only way we could compensate for arthritis in canines was adjusting the food once in a while.

Of course this is just my opinion from my own personal experience. It is not a diagnosis and should not be considered one from the standpoint of this supplement.

My dog weighs about 70 lbs. The formulation I purchased for my use does not contain chondroitin, just glucosamine and MSM. It is a Costco product and the price is very good. Is the chondroitin essential to the proper absorption of the glucosamine?

I think when the vet said the 1500 mg of MSM was OK it was based on the fact you pointed out that any excess would be excreted in the urine. She said the glucosamine was the key ingredient.

The supplement I used was glucosamine/controidtin (also use it for myself) from the health food store. Did not contain MSM but I don't think the MSM is essential and was not mentioned on the label. Yes glucosamine is the key ingredient but even better yet with the controidtin. I still take because I jog and it has been a benefit for ove the hill arthritic knee joints :)
