To be 100% sure you'd need to see a dentist, actually he should have seen one long before starting school, mandatory in most states. The tooth may have experienced trauma and died or hopefully something less serious. Only dental x-rays will tell for sure.

Please take him to the dentist. The tooth may be dying or could have a cavity on the backside or it could have gotten injured somehow. Take care of it now before he's in horrible pain (nothing worse than a toothache!) or before he loses it.

Yes please take him to a dentist, serious teeth issues can cause other medical issues at times

He has no tooth enamel on his teeth, witch means his teeth are not being protected from sweets, etc.
My brother has the same problem and when he was little enamel didn't develop on his teeth so as he got older his teeth started turning darker he is now six and he still has the same problem but he started losing his teeth, hopefully when his bigger ones come in his mouth will develop enamel and protect his teeth.
This is common in many young kids and the best thing to do is just take him to the dentist to get monthly cleanings and when his new teeth come in they will be healthy and he will not have any gum problems.

Hi, Has your son taken any antibiotics? If so, they may be the cause of his tooth discoloration. Unfortunately, tooth discoloration due to antibiotics is permanent. The good news is he'll lose his current teeth and his permanent teeth will grow in undiscolored. :)
