Filing Tax for L1 And L2
    Hi,

We are in US from March 2006. My husband is on L1 and I am on L2. I have started working from September 2006. For first three months both of us have filed tax separately . But since December 2006 we have been filling tax jointly.Just wanted to know information on filing tax and what are the documents that we need to submit?

Please let me details about filing income tax and other laws associated with it

    Regards

    Mona:

As an L-1 in 2006, you have met the Substantial Presence Test and can file as a dual-status alien. However, since you are married, you and your spouse can filed jointly and have the option of choosing to be treated as resident aliens for the entire year. This will allow you to file Form 1040, 1040A or1040EZ AND claim a double standard deduction of $10,300.

The only drawback to this option is that you must declare ALL world-wide income, including any income you earned while in your home country before you arrived in the U.S. If you paid taxes on that income at home, you can claim a credit for those taxes.
