To treat head lice, use anti-lice rinses or shampoos. When choosing over-the-counter products, be sure to follow the directions carefully and with caution.

To help prevent lice, do not share personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, scarves and towels with anyone who are infested with head lice.

You get lice from someone and some place. As mentioned short hair or long hair, you will still get it from the items, The long hair may just allow more contact area.

my 8 yr old daughter got headlice from school about 4 weeks ago. She was treated 2x with NIX cream rinse. I did a complete check of her hair today. I only found 3 nits 2 were
half way down the hair indicating they are old. 1 was definitely over 1/4 inch away from scalp. My questions, does she still have lice? We planned a sleepover for many classmates this Friday - 4 days from now- Do I need to tell parents of children coming?

I wouldn't tell the parents.Just keep them away fromlike sleeping on the same garments or sharing hats.Because they might tel their kids and even though it isn't their fault they will be ridiculed at school(1st grade)

I found that Nix works better than Rid. Sometimes headlice can become immune to medicines. Do boil brushes and combs, get a couple of cans of bedding spray and spray down every mattress, couch, chair, cushion, etc in the house. Sometimes people can forget about the car; spray it too. Vacuum well and wash all bedding, pillows, rugs (anything washable) in hot water and dry it in the dryer. Hats, stuffed animals etc should go in plastic bags for a month. You must do all these things each time and be very thorough or it will come back. After treating the hair, go through every strand under bright light and pick out any nits. The combs can miss things, especially if the hair is very fine. Ask the pharmacist if they have any metal combs, they work better. Final tip: after using the OTC meds twice with no results, I SOAKED all of our hair in Olive Oil (a LOT) and wrapped it in saran wrap. Then I put a grocery bag on and tied it. That stayed on for about 8 hours (no shortcuts!). Then I went through the hair and got out the nits. The olive oil is a LOT less expensive and healthier, especially for younger kids. It worked like a charm, and washed out easily with warm water. This is very healthy for the hair (keeps it hydrated) and bad for the lice, so if I were you, I would keep doing it about twice a week as long as she is in school. It doesn't cost much and would probably prevent recurrence. You could put it on at night and wash it before school. Always put the hair up for school and lecture the child about close contact, sharing head related things, etc. and check the head daily (if anything does happen, you will catch it early) **Whatever shirt she is wearing when you put the oil on will be ruined!
P.S. Has anyone checked you? I'm not being funny or anything; when my girls got it, I did too. Then I got rid of theirs but not mine because my husband can't see well enough to check me for nits, so I had to enlist a trusted friend to check me. Finally, after the olive oil treatment, we got rid of all of it.
