What are you feeding him and how often is he groomed?

Any dandruff or redness of the skin?

If it's allergy related a change in food, can help great deals. Adding a table spoon of plain yogourt can also improve skin and fur quality.

The real only way to combat shedding (especially during season change) is to brush and groom.

Has he gone swimming or gotten into anything?

Sounds like it may possibly be a thyroid deficiency, with the hair loss and the seborrhea, which is the source of the odor. She is producing more skin oils which are becoming slightly rancid on his skin. You can detect this oiliness by simply feeling his coat and skin. A good bath with something like Head and Shoulders will go a long way to removing the odor... for a while. This is the time of the year for dogs to shed their winter coat, and that may be contributing to the hair loss. But, thyroid deficiency also causes hair loss, but in no way as dramatic as the seasonal shedding.

Unfortunately, the only way to be sure is through her vet for a thyroid evaluation test.

He was neglected and when his neighbours took him to the shleter his fur was matted so they had to cut out all the tangles (he isn't bald he just has fairly short fur). I was just wondering if there could be any health issues...
