Independent contractor not getting last check
My daughter is a dog groomer and works for commission as an independent contractor. She has a new job nearer home and has worked a two week notice at her old job. Over a year ago, my daughters former husband had a dog that was not getting along with the other family dogs and my daughter boss, agreed to take the dog and find it a home. The boss had the former husband sign over the rights to the dog. Now this boss says that my daughter has to take the dog with her or she will not release the final paycheck. My daughter does not have a place for the dog. What is her recourse? She has written a letter stating that she was not the owner of the dog and cannot take it and demanding her pay for the work done. Should she send it certified? It is over a thousand dollars she is owed and she is a single mother of three.
