Helpful Hints - Sink and Drain Stoppages - Clogged Drains
Do not pour grease or fats down the drain. Do not wash coffee grounds down the sink. Throw them out. Use chemical cleaners sparingly, especially if you have metal pipes. Some chemical cleaners can cause metal pipes to corrode. We do not ever recommend using ANY chemical cleaners. Some mild sodium hydroxide or sodium nitrate cleaners may be somewhat effective if used no more than once every few months but we do not recommend any brand of chemical drain cleaner, ever! Some tub/shower and floor drains have strainers that are screwed into the drain opening. You can remove these and reach down into the drain with a bent wire to clear out any debris that has accumulated there. Clean pop-up stoppers in the bathroom sink by lifting them out and rinsing them off on a weekly basis. Remove the overflow plate on a tub and raise the pop-up assembly to reach the spring or rocker arm. Remove accumulated hair and rinse well. Keep sewer pipes free of tree roots. If roots are a problem in your yard, fix your pipes or you can use an powerful electric auger to cut the roots out of your pipes. This should be done once a year or so. If you have roots in your drain line we feel it "best" to hire a professional. For immediate relief and to kill the existing roots and prevent further growth you can purchase RootX or Robics Foaming Root Killer that contain Dichlobrnic.
A less expensive way would be to call around to garden supply stores and ask for fine grain Copper Sulphate. Put a 1/2 pound in your toilet and flush it down. Repeat in 6 months.
    Hope this helps, Tom

Poison Oak Prevention [ 2 Answers ]

Hi, I went hiking Friday night with a close, intimate friend and he contracted severe poison oak about a day later. I didn't get any poison oak from this, but I was wearing jeans and long-sleeves. He had shorts and short-sleeves on. So while I most likely did not develop it from the plant, I...

Thanks for being an expert. All the fixtures in my ground-floor bathroom addition refuse to drain. The water runs (not frozen pipes), and the plumbing in the rest of the house is fine. Before it stopped draining there was a few days of water sputtering up the shower drain and/or the sink drain...
