The Crafsman mower that I have (917.377795) is a rear wheel drive, walk behind. I'm trying to pull the mower backwards while it is neutral (like being under a tree), but the wheels lock up in doing so. I'm new to this website, so I hope this information gets to all of you who sent me a message, thank you!

Could be the pinion gears . They could be rusted , or full of grass and debri.
Also could be the clutch return spring on the tranny is missing. Luck

The gear shift works very hard, particularly since I adjusted the brake. Does the brake adjustment effect the gear shift? If so, is it as simple as readjusting the brake? If not, how do I get the gear shift to move more freely? Thanks!
