    From Excel Help:

Specifying labels When you select cells in labeled ranges to create formulas, Microsoft Excel can insert the labels in place of the cell references in your formulas. Using labels can make it easier to see how a formula is constructed. You can use the Label Ranges dialog box (Insert menu, Name submenu, Label command) to specify the ranges that contain column and row labels on your worksheet.

If you define names for cell references after creating one or more formulas that use those cell references, you can update those cell references to names.
    1. Do one of the following:
      • To update only certain formulas on a worksheet, select the cells that contain those formulas.

Label allows you to use the label in an adjacent cell to name the cell. For example, If you have the text Firstname in Cell A1 You can use it to name the Cell B1 so you can refer to B1 as Firstname.

Apply, replaces cell references in formulas with their names. For example: If you have put the formula:

    B1 + " " + B2

In Cell B3 to display the full name, then named B1 and B2 Firstname and Lastname, when you use Apply, the formula in B3 changes to:

    Firstname + " " + Lastname
