    Is referencing family members accounts considered a hippa violation?
    I am working a claim and cannot find insurance on a patient. I look up the last name and find several people with the same last name. So, I chose a person and bill their insurance company with the person's information who does have insurance, but only because they have the same last name.

    Well, many people have the same last name. You should be able to look it up using the SSN assuming you are in the US.
