    10KW Emergency Back-up Generator
I installed a 10KW Back-up Elton Generator with an automatic switch servicing my entire 200A residential service. I realize that even under most circumstances that my service seldom exceeds 50% capacity. Now, the electrical inspector has requested a load calculation summary as to why I chose a 10KW vs. a 20KW which I do not have the expertise to determine or outline the load calculations. In my mind, it was simple economic decision, 3500.00 for generator and switch vs. 9000.00 for generatior and switch. Can anyone provide a quick load calculation outline that I could provide the inspector? I have a 2600 square foot single family dwelling.

I don't have much time to go over details at this time.

Here are a couple of service rating examples and on line calculator that may help:

You should have consulted with the inspector before doing any installation. Inspectors like to try and catch homeowners with problems and limited knowledge.

You may need to arrange so only certain circuits are on generator by installing a panel just for generator power, and not what you have now haivng the potential of the entire load of a 200 amp service on a 10 KW genset.
