Pregnant and pulled a muscle in my stomach
Ouch! The other night I was turning around in bed and got this almighty pain in the side of my stomach, it was so painful all night that I actually cried I thought it was a hernia, then I took a sup of water and about 80% of the pain went so I'm assuming it was also gas but now it just feels like I've some kind of rod stuck in my stomach just on the right of my belly button, its like this 3 days and last night while I was half asleep I turned in bed again only for it to strain again. Is it a pulled muscle? I'm 12 weeks pregnant.

It could be a pulled muscle, could be due to the stretching of the ligaments that support the uterus. These can be pulled quite easily with sudden movements. Hormones in pregnancy, such as relaxin, can also play a role in how easily you can feel aches and pains from your movements. Sometimes it works too well... :)

All you can really do is to try and turn over more slowly, using your arms and legs more than your body to help you turn. Some women find that if they use their hand or forearm to support, or splint, their belly as they turn it helps too.

Certainly, if it continues, or becomes worse, you can let your doctor or midwife be aware of it.

Goes to show how much husbands listen during the doctor appointments. :) It was more than a round ligament pain when I went into the doctors for the same kind of pain. It turned out that I had strained my ligament, which there is nothing you can do about other than to baby your stomach. When you go up and down stairs or get out of bed my doctor suggested I cradle my stomach as to take some of the weight off my ligaments. He also told me that once it happens the first time it is much easier for it to happen over and over again throughout the pregnancy. I'm very careful now if I need to get out of bed quickly or up and down the stairs and thankfully I haven't had a problem since. I know how painful it is.

Round ligament pain is usually down closer to the groin area on either side of the belly. I see this all the time at the hospital, particularly in the warmer months as dehydration can cause round ligament pain to rear it's ugly head.

    Just saying... ;)
