Location of the CV joints is the same on all front wheel drive cars, there are acctually two cv joints on each side. One against the hub centered on the back side of the wheel and the other is at the other end of the shaft coming out of the outer cv joint against the transmision or cross shaft tward the center of the engine compartment.

Yes, that is likely a left outer cv joint. That will need verified by your mechanic as this isn't the best DIYer repair. Unless you've done it before, I'll tell you: it's labor intensive! And messy, too.
Are any of the cv joint boots split or dry-rotted? That open boot (if there is one) may have allowed grease to be thrown out.
You can still have a failed cv joint even without that boot losing grease.
Shop around for prices on a simple joint replacement as compared to an axle replacement.

New Cardone Select half axles cost around $50. If you decide to replace the axle yourself, this link should help:

If the old boot split, clean the area up with a rag and brake cleaner.
