    trial balance of departmental accounts
    Hi...

I am struggling with a question regarding departmental accounts. They gave me a list of opening balances, then a list of transactions for the first three months. I have posted all the relevant info to the ledger and now have to do the trial balance, however I am not balancing. With the exact amount of the opening balances, can someone please help & let me know what I'm doing wrong?!

    Herewith the question:
Jake starts business on 1 Jan 2006 with following assets:
    Stock - Dept A = 3000
    Stock - Dept B = 5000
    Fixtures = 4000
    Cash = 6000

    Transactions during first three months"
    Purchases - Dept A = 31000
    Purchases - Dept B = 29000
    Receipts from Debtors = 52000
Disc Allowed to Debtors = 2100
    Payments to Creditors = 47200
    Cash Sales - Dept A = 3800
    Cash Sales - Dept B = 9200
    Credit Sales - Dept A = 37000
    Credit Sales - Dept B = 29000
    Gen Exp - Dept A = 3000
    Gen Exp - Dept B = 4200
    Unallocated Exp = 4800
    Drawings = 4000
Cash in hand at end of period = 5700
    Selling expenses = 2100
    Cartons purchased = 3500
Creditors outstanding at end of period = 16300
    Stock at 31 March 2006 - Dept A = 4200
    Stock at 31 March 2006 - Dept B = 5800
    Cartons in stock 31 March 2006 = 1400
    Debtors outstanding = 11900

Selling Expenses and discounts are to be apportioned on the basis of cartons sold, namely - Dept A = 60000 & Dept B = 45000

Sales of Cartons are included in the sales figures. Unallocated Expenses are to be charged to departments on the basis of floor area, which is Dept A = 1000m2 & Dept B = 600m2 (m2 = square meter)

    Required:
Write up Cash Book & all necessary Ledger Accounts, Incl Control Accounts for Debtors & Creditors - Draft Cash book as if Ledger account.

Prepare Trial Balance at 31 March 2006

Prepare departmental Trading account & departmental Income statement

Prepare Balance sheet at 31 March 2006 - Ignore Depreciation.

    Here is my trial balance: D = Debit & C = Credit
    Bank - 5700 D
    Stock Dept A - 3000 D
    Stock Dept B - 5000 D
    Fixtures - 4000 D
    Discount Allowed Dept A - 1200 D
    Discount Allowed Dept B - 900 D
    Purchases Dept A - 33187.5 D
    Purchases Dept B - 30312.50 D
    Debtors - 11900 D
    Gen Exp Dept A - 3000 D
    Gen Exp Dept B - 4200 D
    Drawings - 4000 D
    Unallocated Exp Dept A - 3000 D
    Unallocated Exp Dept B - 1800 D
    Selling Exp Dept A - 1200 D
    Selling Exp Dept B - 900 D
    Sales Dept A - 40800 C
    Sales Dept B - 38200 C
    Creditors - 16300 C
    Debit side total 113300
    Credit side total 95300

(I don't yet know if I can complete the rest of the question, First need to get this part fixed before I can do closing entries & Financial Statements)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance,
