I went for a medical and elevated levels of white blood cells were found, they also found blood and protein in my eurine... it has been a year and the blood cell count is six times worse... I have been for a cystoscopy, colonoscopy and sonar nothing comes up,I have now been referred to a Nephrologist, what can I expect as far as tests go, and what could be causing all of this? I have had Bilhazia and my mother had eclampsia when I was born. Any assistance or advice appreciated.

Excessive protein in urine signifies kidney disease. This is why you are being referred to a nephrologist who is a specialist for kidneys. He/she will probably take more blood and urine samples (more specific urine samples that is) to determine why your kidneys are malfunctioning. I can understand the connection with the low white blood cells, but am unable to explain it.

Do you have diabetes, or any family member ?

I do not have diabetes nor is it in my family history, My mother has Astma and my Grandmother has high blood pressure. Why would they not pick up the kidney disease through the cystoscopy or sonar? I had those done a year ago is it possible it was dorment then? If I do indeed have kidney disease what treatment is there and will this cause any long term damage? Thank You Tick for your response

Okay, we have ruled out diabetes. One other reason you might have elevated protein in your urine is fever; so, since you have high white blood cell count, this could possibly mean your immune system is fighting something. What we can't possibly know. I have listed below some of the causes of protein in urine, but you are going to find this out anyway when you see the specialist. We can't diagnose here on AMHD, Chan, sorry but it is just not possible.

* Polycystic kidney disease is also one of the causes of protein in urine.
* Kidney disease, along with problem in the urinary tract is one of major causes of protein in urine.
* Diabetes is one of the main causes of protein in urine. Hence, in case you are an diabetic it is important that you take the required measures to prevent any further damage.
* Like diabetes high blood pressure can also be the culprit behind the condition.
* Consistent use or over use of some drugs is also said to cause protein in urine. Therefore, you should talk to your physician about possible side effects of the drug, before you start a new drug.
* Heart disease and heart failure both can cause this condition.
* Rheumatoid arthritis is also one of the causes of protein in urine.
* One of the not commonly known causes of protein in urine is leukemia.
* There are some proteinuria causes like not drinking sufficient amount of water, which are also common.
