Caught shoplifting in toronto, canada please help!
Hey so 2 months ago I was caught shoplifting in a no frills. I know it was a stupid thing to do, it was for a bottle of coke and beef jerky both retail prices combined for around 5 dollars. When I left the store they grabbed me and told me to come back inside. Anyway the security guards and employees seemed pretty civil about it and when I asked them if I was going to jail or going to get fined. They said you wouldn't get fined or put in jail but they said they needed to call the police and my parents. I continually asked if I was going to get fined or put in jail cause I was honestly quite afraid since this was my second time. I know I'm a horrible person but I'm beginning to work on it anyway that's not the point. My point is I recently got a letter saying I need to pay a fine of 600$ which I had no idea I had to pay because the security people and the Police officers said nothing would happen to me. Should I pay the fine? Should I fight it saying I was told there would be no fine? Please help I'm 16 years old live in Canada and my parents are really mad at me!

What you got is from the store correct, not the court?
You did not get photo'ed or finger printed did you ?

IN Canada what happens the store is allowed to change you a fee ( they may call it a fine) but it is a charge to pay for the costs of your stealing. And 600 is about what they charge.

It is not officially a fine, it is a store cost and fee they are allowed to ask you to pay. And there is ( if this is what I think it is) no where to fight it, since there is no court hearing, you may refuse to pay, and they are allowed to still press charges with the police ( they basically black mail you into paying

    Hi,

I was caught as a suspect of shoplifting today at Talize. They didn't find any items in my bag however, they said that I have been stealing from the store. They called the police but I was not asked to go to court or anything. But they have asked me not to come back to the store and gave me a letter that says that I have to pay $600 as a fine. I am an international student and I was scared when they told me that the police is coming so I didn't see what they gave me.

Now I don't know how I will pay this fine as it is too much. I need so advice on what should I do. Should I just ignore the fine? Do I have any criminal record against me which will come out in my background check??
