    Is a dependent L2 visa holder elegiable for a non working Social Security number
    My daughter is a dependent L2 visa holder. She is in the process of applying to colleges. She needs a social security number to apply for a scholarship (FAFSA).She appears as a dependent on my person taxes.She has been assigned a ITIN number We have approched the social security office requesting them for a non working social security number.They flatly refused her. Although the instructions say that you maybe assign a SS number if you require it for a specific purpose or for certain fedral purposes.
    Please help. I would like to know if she is elegible.

    Has she given her TIN on the scholarship application? Most do not actually need a SSN, they just ask for it on the application, as they have nothing to do with the Social Security Administration.

    She is ineligible. To be eligible for FAFSA, she must be...

    * U.S. permanent resident, with a Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as an Alien Registration Receipt Card or "Green Card”)
    * Conditional permanent resident (I-551C)
    * Other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any one of the following designations: “Refugee,” “Asylum Granted,” “Indefinite Parole,” “Humanitarian Parole,” or “Cuban-Haitian Entrant”
    * A citizen of the Republic of Palau (PW), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (MH), or the Federated States of Micronesia (FM).

    She can't put her TIN, FAFSA requires a social security number with a few exceptions as stated above. The only time a SSN is not required is when they are asking for parent's information and the parents don't have a SSN. Parents without a SSN should enter 00-000-0000 in place of a SSN. Don't put the TIN, it will cause an error on FAFSA.

    Even I am an L2 visa holder and I am dependent on my mother. I want to apply for FAFSA and I can't because I also don't have a SSN. Please tell me what you have done to support your daughter financially so I can follow the same thing.
