    Minnesota child custody question?
I am presently the single mother of a 2 1/2 year old, and recently confirmed that Im expecting child number two.
The father of the child I am expecting and I have agreed that I will relinquish my rights to this child after he/she is born, giving him full costody. But, someone told me that if I relinquish the rights to this child, I am also doing so on the rights to my first child. They do not have the same father. I am not willing to lose the rights to my first child. Is this true that by signing over my second child, that Im also signing off on my first?

Not only is it not true, but whoever told you that you could relinquish your rights to the second child told you wrong.

There is this myth that a parent can relinquish their rights just by wanting to. Only a court can terminate parental rights and courts are very reluctant to do so.

Now you may be able allow the father to get sole custody, if the courts agree, but he can file for child support and may be able to get it. He would have to go for an adoption to get your rights terminated.

We may be able to help more if you give us more background
