    87 Toyota 4x4 bad timing belt?
    My toyota 22R truck would not restart after being driven for about 20 minutes in the city. I actually turned the truck off, restarted it and it died with a loud cluck noise after about 30 seconds. The starter turns the engine fast enough but when I checked TDC the timing marks lined up but the rotor was turned past the number 1 cylinder position. Also when I tried to restart later all I got was a sputter. What do you think?

    I believe it has a timing chain, not a belt. It's hard to tell from afar what it really is. You will need to tear into it.

    What mostly happens is the chain guides break which allows the already streched chain to flop around a bit and it will jump time. A very easy diagnosis is a compression check.
    Or... pull off the valve cover and you can see the whole picture. At TDC the top chain sprocket should have an arrow pointing almost 12:00
    Looking down the chain through the timing cover you can see if both the chain guides are there or not.
