I have a ceiling fan with light. My remote control recently blew up and I'm wondering whether I can install a wall controller instead? The current wall switch is a standard one with 3 wires - I'm assuming Earth, Hot, and Neutral. The wires coming out of the ceiling also has the same 3 wires.

You usually wire the remote from the house supply. In some remote fans it is not possible to bypass since there are no pull chains to control the fan speed or the light. Look at the wires to the fan, if you have black, blue, neutral and ground it should work but at only 1 speed. Fan black and blue together to black, white to white and ground to ground. Many replacement remote fan controllers will work as long as the DIP switches are set the same.

Here are a few draw back but the answer to your question is yes, it can be done. However, you must disconnect the old receiver in the canopy to start with. At that point it would be very easy to just install a new receiver and remote. If you don't and go ahead with hard wire you can't control the fan and light separately like ma0641 says. So no pull chains at all, right?

Hi ballengerb1 & ma0641, thanks for both suggestions. Yes unfortunately this fan doesn't have pull chains. I did hard wire the fan to the existing wall switch and this just worked as you said under 1 speed and the light was turned on also.

I guess my best option right now is to source for a new remote control.
