    Tax deductions on OPT
    Hi,

I am on F-1 status here. I started my OPT from jan 2007 and also, my job started in Jan -07 in NY

I have worked on CPT but never had to pay SSN pre tax.

My paycheck on OPT had SSN deducted and also Medicare.

Should I be being these? Or should I let my HR in Offcie know about this.

Also, for F1 tax filing for last year, which forms should I fill?

Should they be standard deducted or Itemized? I was taking thesis while on CPT and am single.
    I appreciate your help.

    Thank you.

If you have been in US for less than 5 yrs then you are exempted from SSN and medicare tax during OPT. You should talk with HR and let them know about it. For reference see IRS tax handbook.

If you arrived in the U.S. on F-1 status on 1 Jan 2002 or later, then you should be exempted from Social Security and Medicare taxes. Discuss this with your HR department.

For F-1 tax filing, you need to file Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.
