Will any universal remote work with Hampton Bay ceiling fans?

I've purchased a Hampton Bay universal remote for my Hampton Bay fan and it doesn't seem to work. I can only get the light to work. This fan does not have pull strings and because it was a demo unit, it did not have a remote with it.
