    Moving States Tax Rules
If you live in two states during a year and only work in one of the states, (and I do not own a home in either) do I need to file taxes for both states?
Also, for college students who go to school in a different state in which they grew up and their parents live, yet the student comes home for the summer and works where they grew up and does not work at school, should the student be filing taxes for both states or just where they worked?
Do vote registration, car registration, and driver's license also play a role in this?

Voter registration, car registration and driver's licenses are indications that you intend to live and work in the state in which these actions are done.

You MUST file in the state in which you worked. The state will be looking for a tax return from you and will eventually track you down.

Your home state may also require a tax return, but will normally give you credit for taxes paid to another state. If the other state has a higher tax rate, you will probably owe ZERO tax to the home state.

If you need professional help preparing your return, please consider using my services. You will find my rates extremely competitve. Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested! I have references from clients who are people just like you.
