My Williams Nat Gas Heater Pilot will not lit up

However hard I tried to keep the pilot knob pushed in, I cannot get the burner inside heater to lit up (forget staying lit - it does not lit up at all). This is just the second year with the heater - so quite brand new. Gas seems to be on, because I can get the heater working in a different room....

This old wall gas heater, about 60's, is depositing a plume of gray on the wall and onto the ceiling above the unit. The service man has already told me that they is nothing that can be done about the soot/discoloration on the walls in the room. He assures me that the gas heater is working...
