    Shoplifting at kohls?
I'm 20 years old with no prior record, squeaky clean. I was caught shoplifting at Kolhs last week. I was approched by the Loss Prevention Specialist as soon as I walked all the way through the door. I followed him to the back office where I surrendered the items ($130.00 worth). He took down my information and called the cops. When the officer came he searched my purse to make sure I didn't still have anyting and then just told me the date and time to be in court and let me leave on my own. I was not arested. What will happen at court and do I need an attorny? The officer told me outside considering I'm 20 and have maintained a clean record and this is a first offence the judge will be understanding and I could possibly have it exponged if I pay a fine and agree to take a shoplifting(Anti) course if I just ask about it and talk to him... however I feel that that just seems too easy or good to be true (just asking for it without any legal help behind me.)

Also: I do not know if I'm getting charges pressed against me by Kohls. When I asked the loss prevention specialist before he called the cops he said "mabe, mabe not, we'll see"... that's it. Then had me sign something stateing that I "might or might not" receive a letter from Kohls dept. store attornies demanding payment for the items plus the hourly wages he lost dealing with me. That does not tell me anything about what they are doing with me and why would I be liable to pay his hourly wage from the hour he spent with me in his office (that took time away from his shift)? Isn't that what he's paid to do.

I'd hire a lawyer... They not only would know the every option you have where you reside... (it helps to know what state and country), but also to represent you that day. Sure it will cost you some money, but walking in defending yourself you are likely to end up worse off.

    Hello A:

I can NOT disagree with smoothy's recommendation. It's ALWAYS best to be represented by counsel... However, given that this is your first offense, and it's petty, you'll probably get probation or diversion depending on where you live... A criminal lawyer will cost you at least $5,000, and probably more. Unless you're wealthy, the court WILL provide you with a lawyer at no cost to you.
