    Ask ob/gyn ?
I work in a hospital and had the opportunity to ask one of the Doctors about IUI's. He told me that washed or unwashed semen, which ever the patient preferred, would be inserted via catheter into the uterus. I thought it was not safe to inject unwashed semen. Is it?

The semen is "washed" in the laboratory (called sperm processing or sperm washing). We don't have ob/gyns here and I don't think we even say that. I am not one but in healthcare. The above is my understanding. I have never heard of unwashed semen being used, unless they have changed the procedure, but I don't think so.
